Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

What exactly is FASD? FASD stands for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, which is a medical condition a child can obtain if alcohol is consumed during pregnancy and exposed to the child in utero. Despite 1 in 30 children being suspected of living with a FASD, every child will present with different skills and abilities. Children with FASDs can have impairments in the areas of: learning, executive functioning, motor skills, behavior, social engagement, or a combination of these abilities. Treatment services, especially in the areas of speech, occupational, and physical therapy, should be individualized to each patient and their respective strengths. At CARE, children living with FASD will be treated by a FASD-informed speech and occupational therapy team with their specific needs at the forefront of each treatment session.
